Unilever – An employee engagement portal

A digital design identity has helped spark new ideas about how Unilever can engage with staff whilst actively helping them to grow their skills. Partnering with Silverman Research and UC Berkeley, the Hive project puts an innovative crowd sourcing technology behind an internal communications challenge.

The tool allows Unilever to canvass employee opinion on a series of personal improvement disciplines from the inside-out. Unlike conventional research surveys, it steers away from the question/answer format, drawing instead on the principles of social networking to enable inter-peer discussion and the rating of ideas. Acting as a digital hub for collaboration, the Hive also serves to develop personal effectiveness, offers links to best practice and provides a feedback facility for participants.

The key challenge has been to position the Hive as an independent pilot. The Hive conveys a sense of action, activity and progress without feeling like just another management directive. The digital assets we designed include the research tool, website, HTML email and all document templates. The Hive goes live in early 2012, for more details contact Richard Bull.
